Steve Lyons played professional baseball for 13 years and has broadcasted Major League Baseball for over 20 years. On a personal level, the former Red Sox and White Sox utilityman had a major influence on my wardrobe, especially the socks I wear.

On Episode 14 of the "Life Around the Seams" podcast, Lyons tells hilarious stories about his life, on and off the field. It starts with why the Boston Red Sox couldn't find him on the day he was drafted in the first round of the 1981 draft. Then how, on his first roadtrip in the minor leagues, the bus driver died, a player nearly fell out of the bus, and the bus caught fire. Welcome to Steve Lyons' career.

We discuss playing center field on the night Roger Clemens struck out 20 batters, the demons Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd faced, getting traded for Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver, getting sent back to the minors, playing in Hawaii, playing tie-tac-toe in the infield during games, and of course, the night he dropped his pants on the field during a game.

Mostly, we just giggle and laugh, as Lyons tells fascinating and very candid stories for over 90 minutes.
But when his career stalled in the minors, Reid forged his own path as a baseball executive, first bringing minor league baseball in Texas to Round Rock and Corpus Christi. He's currently the president of the Houston Astros.

In Episode 12 of the "Life Around the Seams" podcast, we trace Reid's life growing up around baseball, in the clubhouse when his father played, the heckles he received playing youth baseball, a famous exhibition game when he pitched against his father, running two of the most successful minor league teams in the country, and then getting his own "callup" to the majors.

Reid tells us when he realized his father was kind of a big deal, where he was during the legendary fight between his dad and Robin Ventura, when his kids realized their grandfather was a big deal, and how he uses his children to learn how to reach the next generation of baseball fans.
We decided to record a Podcast, where we talked about our time as either former newspapers ball scribes (Hurst, myself) or current ball scribe (Hayes).

Between the three of us, we've been a beat reporter for all five California teams and seven teams total, with a combined 25 years of experience.

We discuss our initial "I can't believe they're paying me to do this" moments, this story behind the story of how a few scoops came to fruition, the scoops that got away, what it's like eating with Mike Scioscia, writing two stories about two potential new managers (just in case), and why one of us exited the journalism world to work.
He's the leader producer for the San Jose Sharks television broadcasts on NBC Sports Bay Area. Then after the grind of a grueling season, Maddison makes documentaries. Not simple easy documentaries, but emotional stories about the intersection of sports and society.

In episode 10 of the "Life Around the Seams" podcast, we find out why Sean Maddison won't just rest and enjoy the offseason. He's produced over 10 documentaries, but we'll focus on three: OUT, the Glenn Burke Story; TOMBOY, elevating the conversation about gender in sports; and LETTERS TO 87, a tribute the late 49ers legend Dwight Clark.

We also discussed why he moved to New York when his producing career was just getting established in the SF Bay Area, producing VH1's "50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs" and how that experience shapes his work to this day.
He's not somebody who sports fans hear very often. But his fingerprints are all over a lot of the live sporting events that are viewed by thousands, if not millions.

In Episode 9 of the "Life Around the Seams" podcast, our guest is David Feldman. Not the David Feldman who is an on-air host for NBC Sports Bay Area, but the David Feldman who is a producer for numerous live sporting events across multiple networks, and an official scorer for Major League Baseball games. We discuss growing up in the left field bleachers of the Oakland Coliseum with a diverse group of characters, how a chance encounter with then-A's play-by-play announcer Greg Papa led to a prediction that launched his career, and we trace how he rose through the ranks in the production truck.

We also learn how Reggie Jackson learned to trust him, get his advice for up-and-coming sportscasters, how you produce a sport that has never been televised, and find out the pros and cons of sharing a name with somebody who is on television almost every night.
But he gave it all up to become a minor league baseball play-by-play announcer.

In Episode 8 of the "Life Around the Seams" podcast, we learn how walking out of his tryout with the Montreal Expos in 1969 led Capps to a career in journalism. He was honored with the George F. Peabody Award for the investigation over a three-year period that resulted in the downfall of the SMU football program. He covered 16 Space Shuttle missions, two tours of duty in the first Gulf War, Hurricane Alicia, the Midwest Floods, the overthrow of the Haitian government, and earned a National Emmy Nomination with CNN for a 10-hour-long broadcast for the fiery end of the Branch Dividian Siege in Waco.

But one morning, Mike woke up with a bedpost in his right hand and blood on his forehead. That's when he knew that he needed to leave television journalism and change his life. And it was baseball that saved his life.

When you think of somebody who has spent their entire career playing for one organization, you usually think of Tony Gwynn with the Padres, Chipper Jones with the Braves, or Cal Ripken, Jr. with the Orioles. The name Tim Dillard probably does not come to mind.

Yet in many ways, it's even more remarkable that Dillard has only played for the Milwaukee Brewers organization: 16 years total, parts of four years in the majors (73 appearances), and 12 years in the triple-A Pacific Coast League, eight when the affiliate was in Nashville and four when the affiliate was in Colorado Springs. [Dillard also played very briefly for an independent team.]

In Episode 7 of the "Life Around the Seams" podcast, we discuss how and why Dillard has stayed with one organization, how at age 34 his value now is just as much as a quasi-coach and therapy dog as it is a relief pitcher, based primarily on the 500-plus videos he's made and posted on social media.

We also discuss growing up around the ballpark when his father was a minor league manager, his initial "callup" to the majors, his conversion to sidearm pitcher, his next "callup" to the majors, and his most recent "social media callup" to Milwaukee.

He's ambidexterous. He's not a switcher hitter. He's a switch pitcher. Yes, he throws left-handed *and* right-handed, usually in the same game.

In Episode 6 of the "Life Around the Seams" podcast, we learn the story of how Pat's father had this idea of making him a switch-pitcher, when Pat realized throwing with both arms was not normal, the confusion it caused to some people, the challenge of learning to pitch with both arms, and the advantages it creates.

We also discuss how few options he had leaving high school, getting a chance to pitch at Creighton University with both arms, his hilarious professional debut that inspired a rule to be named after him, when he nearly quit baseball in the minor league, why he needed to reinvent himself after injuries, and what it was like making a Major League debut that was unlike anything we've seen in decades.

In Episode 5 of the "Life Around the Seams" podcast, it's not an interview. It's just two baseball nerds talking baseball history -- unusual stories that you can't believe are true, and stories that you thought you knew but didn't completely know.

We learn about a very dangerous foul ball, the earliest attempts to speed up baseball, how to play a game when the infield is saturated, why the Detroit Tigers didn't want to tag out a baserunner one day, what happens when a ball is split in half, and when did Pete Rose actually break the all-time hits record.
He once retired 26 batters in a row, against the defending World Series champion Oakland Athletics, before Ken Phelps spoiled the perfect game with a pinch hit home run. His promising career ended prematurely due to shoulder injury ... and then he experienced real heartbreak.

Brian needed open-heart surgery. His daughter Kassidy was diagnosed with leukemia. His son David fell 30 feet off a ski lift and nearly died, then doctors discovered a tumor in his brain that required surgery. David made a full recovery and he's now pitching for the Colorado Rockies triple-A affiliate in Albuquerque.
A few lucky people have secured multiple baseballs. Zack Hample has obtained over 10,000 baseballs at 53 different stadiums, and incredibly, this is now his job. Yes, getting baseballs at ballparks is how he makes his living.
Hosts Mike Petriello and Matt Meyers asked questions about the Rockies unique challenge of winning consistently in altitude, and a myriad factors that included fastball-oriented pitchers, spin rates, roster flexibility, how deep starting pitchers go into a game, and even two-way players.

I've known Petriello since my days doing the Dodgers pre- and post-game radio work, when his old Dodgers blog, Mike Scioscia's Tragic Illness, caught my attention and became a must-visit every day. Petriello brings a thoughtful approach to his writing. It's both analytical and common sense. I've learned a lot reading him over the years, and so I was excited that he's doing a podcast.

Combine that with an interview with the GM of the Isotopes major-league affiliate, and of course I'm going to listen to see what nuggets pertain to us in Albuquerque. What I've learned about Bridich is that he keeps information very close to the vest. He's not interested in giving away any secrets or making sure the public understands everything he's trying to do for the Rockies. I respect that. So it's not a ground-breaking interview, but I'd recommend it anyway.

Here's a few bullet-point items that relate to the Topes:

* The more you play in altitude, the more understanding you have of it. Bridich values the time spent at triple-A for players. This reinforces what we heard this when the Rockies left Colorado Springs and came to Albuquerque. It's also an indication the Rockies won't promote players from double-A very often. We'll see them at triple-A.

* Roster flexibility is extremely important at Coors Field. Most teams carry 12 pitchers and occasionally 13. The Rockies utilize 13 pitchers more frequently than others and it's not necessarily excessive for them. This is an indication that we'll continue to see Isotopes players move around multiple infield and outfield positions on a regular basis. That means the Topes might not have the best defense every night because players are getting comfortable at multiple positions, so they are better prepared for the majors.

* Petriello is a proponent of starting pitchers getting removed before they go a third time through the lineup and asked Bridich if that philosophy is something the Rockies share. Bridich didn't really bite either way. Overall, he felt putting the lion's share of the responsibility on either part of the pitching staff is unfair. Bridich mentioned that at the lower levels of the minor leagues, innings are controlled. But at the higher levels, like the Topes, it seems like he'd like to see them go through a lineup three times if possible.

* Meyers asked a question about a topic I've explored during broadcasts, pregame interviews, and even wrote in the late 1990s as a newspaper reporter when a young Mark Mulder was close to the majors: somebody who pitches and hits on a regular basis. El Paso utilized hitter-turned-pitcher Jason Lane as a pinch hitter regularly in the games he didn't start on the mound the last two years. Outfielder Jeremy Barfield told me last year, after his dominant two innings on the mound, that he'd rather fail as a hitter than succeed as a pitcher -- but he was open to the idea of being used as a situational lefty reliever, as long as he gets to keep hitting. The two-way player concept was tried by the Brewers with Brooks Kieschnick in the early 2000s. Bridich said it's hard enough to reach the majors in any role, let alone stay in the majors, that it would take a truly special athlete to pull off both roles. Bridich added there's a couple players in the Rockies system who could possibly do it, that it's an intriguing concept, but he'd have to give it a lot more thought.

* The Rockies recent acquisition of relief pitchers who throw their fastball overwhelmingly more often than any other pitch was also discussed at length on the podcast. They didn't discuss the minors within this topic. But on a personal level, I'll consciously pay more attention to see if Topes pitchers throw their fastball more often in altitude than at sea level this season. This is probably a dumb idea because you want hard data, not my perception while giving a live read about O'Reilly Auto Parts, but we'll see if any trends are noticeable. [Or I'll forget by Opening Day.]
We'll start the in-depth position previews for possible Isotopes once we get to March, when we see the full list of invites to the Rockies spring training, and the dominos start to fall. But in the meantime, we're looking at some interesting storylines to watch.

Today we'll breakdown all the different pitchers named Tyler that could be coming through Albuquerque. Yes, this is a real post. There's four of them, three are lefties, and two are coming off major injuries.

Tyler Chatwood missed the entire 2015 season recovering from Tommy John Surgery. Before the injury, he was a member of the Rockies starting rotation and a pretty good one, too. In 2013, Chatwood made 20 starts in the majors, compiled a 3.15 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 5.3 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9. Chatwood began the 2014 season in the rotation and made four April starts, before requiring the elbow surgery. Teams continue to get more and more cautious with pitchers returning from elbow surgery, and this is Chatwood's second (he also had one in high school). As a result, it's possible that Chatwood makes a few rehab starts with the Isotopes before he returns to the majors. This Tyler is right-handed.

Tyler Matzek endured a difficult 2015 season with extreme wildness, but it ended on a positive note, and the Rockies still believe he will help them in the majors. Matzek was sent to the Isotopes after his walks started to get out of control in the majors. He had one nightmare outing with the Topes (12 batters, seven walks, one HBP), then was shutdown. Matzek later went home and worked with a sports psychologist. He returned to the Topes in August as a reliever. He was quite candid to me in pregame interviews about the anxiety he felt on the mound and how he's learned to avoid these triggers. Pitching coach Darryl Scott, who knows Matzek better than just anybody, set a goal to get Matzek a save before the season ended. That's what happened the final week of the season in Fresno. Matzek told me he still wants to be a starter, but understands the decision is the Rockies and he'll do whatever they think is best. How he performs in spring training will obviously be critical to where Matzek begins this season. He does have minor league options remaining, so he could spent time with the Isotopes. This Tyler is left-handed.
Tyler Anderson missed the entire 2015 season with a stress fracture in his pitching elbow. Anderson was the Rockies first-round pick (20th overall) out of the University of Oregon in 2011. Anderson has dominated the minor leagues. In 59 career starts, his ERA is 2.39, with a 1.095 WHIP, 7.2 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9. The last time he pitched competitively was 23 starts at double-A in 2014. Anderson actually visited Isotopes Park briefly last year. The Rockies wanted to break the monotony of him rehabbing at their Arizona spring training complex, so he spent a homestand with us. He's still considered one of the top prospects in the Rockies organization. Hopefully, he's healthy in spring training and can compete without any limitations. Considering his domination at double-A, it seems like Anderson will be at triple-A Albuquerque. This Tyler is left-handed.

Tyler Ybarra spent the 2014 season as a reliever at double-A New Britain. In 38 appearances, he recorded three saves, a 4.87 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, 8.9 K/9 and 5.7 BB/9. Numbers don't tell the real story of his season. The blog Purple Row posted a poignant story about Ybarra's infant daughter undergoing open heart surgery just days after the Rockies acquired Ybarra. Ybarra was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the 43rd round of the 2008 round out of Wellington High in Kansas. The Rockies acquired him in a trade last January for pitcher Jayson Aquino. This will be his age-26 season. Ybarra has yet to pitch at triple-A in his career. Bullpens are one of the hardest areas to project because so many things can change based on injury. After all, last winter, the Rockies signed Justin Miller to a minor league contract. Miller had major-league experience and a big league camp invitation, but began the year at double-A. That didn't last long. Miller ended up back-and-forth between Denver and Albuquerque. But I have a feeling we'll see Ybarra at some point with the Topes this season. This Tyler is left-handed.
Personally, I thought another team would claim Parker. But this is a tough time to claim a player on waivers. Almost every team is at their 40-player limit, so a claim requires potentially losing one of their current players.

Against that backdrop, we learned that Parker cleared waivers, and the Rockies outrighted him to triple-A Albuquerque. This means a likely return to the Isotopes in 2016.

A few days ago, we looked at Alex Castellanos' return to Albuquerque, his chances of getting a cameo in the majors, and a little on the Topes potential outfielders. Since then, outfielder Alex Dickerson was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays, and now Parker remains in the Rockies organization.

This is a win-win for the Isotopes because Castellanos and Parker, at least in the minor leagues, are legitimate hitters in the middle of the order. Both are looking for more opportunities to prove themselves in the majors. In the meantime, the Topes get a couple dudes who will make their offense a whole lot better.

Parker experienced a 2015 season that began as the most difficult of his career. His slash line was .152/.235/.250 after play on May 7. Hits started dropping in, here and there, and then Parker caught fire. His slash was .327/.340/.510 in May, and after a slight dip in June, he slashed .310/.364/.500 in July. Parker's path to the majors was opened with the multiple injuries to Dickerson, and later the release of Drew Stubbs.

With the Rockies, Parker started 27 games over the last two months (mostly in left field) and slashed .179/.233/.311 in 112 plate appearances.

Parker was originally drafted by the Rockies in 2010 with the 26th overall selection, out of Clemson University, where he played quarterback on the football team for two years, and played baseball for three years.

More transactions could occur before pitchers and catchers report. But as of now, the depth chart for the Rockies outfielders probably looks like this:

MLB -- Carlos Gonzalez, Charlie Blackmon, Gerardo Parra and Brandon Barnes (plus first baseman Ben Paulsen can play the outfield too).

AAA -- Alex Castellanos, Noel Cuevas, David Dahl, Kyle Parker, Jordan Patterson, Michael Tauchman. [Intentionally listed alphabetically.]

Over the Christmas Break, the Colorado Rockies signed outfielder Alex Castellanos to a minor league contact with an invitation to spring training. This likely means a return of Castellanos to the Albuquerque Isotopes.
In the case of Castellanos, he's on a minor league contract and he has limited major league experience, so it's not a controversial statement. I still feel weird about it. In Castellanos' mind, he's probably hoping to be in the major leagues, as he should.]

The Purple Row blog opined that Castellanos could be this year's Roger Bernadina. It's not a bad comparison, other than Bernadina hitting left and Castellanos batting right. They both run well, hit for power and average, and could play all three outfield positions. Bernadina is the more natural center fielder, but Castellanos has played a healthy dose of infield positions over the last couple seasons.

Topes fans know Castellanos well. He played on the 2012 and 2013 teams. Both years, he was the victim of bad timing, suffering an injury at a time when the Dodgers were in need of an outfielder from the minor leagues. Castellanos hit for more home runs and RBIs in 2013, but had a higher average, on-base and slugging in 2012. (Personally, I thought Castellanos was pressing to hit more home runs in 2013 because he was surrounded by mostly singles hitters.)

Since then, Castellanos has bounced around a lot of organizations. After the 2013 season, the Dodgers designated him for assignment when they claimed outfielder Mike Baxter off waivers, then traded Castellanos to the Boston Red Sox for outfielder Jeremy Hazelbaker. Castellanos never played for the Red Sox. He was also claimed off waivers by the Texas Rangers, but never played for them either. This time, he was claimed off waivers by the San Diego Padres.

Castellanos spent the 2014 season at triple-A El Paso, and posted a slash line of .275/.351/.439 that was not up to his usual standards. Castellanos also played a lot of different positions. From the broadcast booth, he didn't look like the same player.

The Mets signed Castellanos for the 2015 season and assigned him to triple-A Las Vegas. Castellanos was back to being one of the dominant players in the PCL back, posting a career-high slugging percentage, slashing .314/.381/.614, while cutting down on his strikeouts. Castellanos destroyed the Topes pitching staff early in the season.

In mid-July, I interviewed Castellanos for the Topes pregame show and he admitted that all the changes in organizations and positions had an negative impact on him. Castellanos was about to become a father for the first time and ended the season playing in six games for Yomiuri in Japan.

Now he's with the Rockies. I'll be eager to find out why he signed with the Rockies. Usually, minor league free agents sign with teams they think will give them a chance to reach the majors and/or a team that has a triple-A city they think they will enjoy. Considering the success Castellanos enjoyed in Albuquerque and the atmosphere at Isotopes Park, I wouldn't be surprised if those were factors.

What type of chance does Castellanos have to reach the majors? It wasn't bad at the time. It gets even better if the Rockies trade away one of their four left-handed hitting outfielders: Carlos Gonzalez, recently signed Gerardo Parra, Charlie Blackmon or Corey Dickerson. The Rockies also have lefty hitting Ben Paulsen, who is primarily a first baseman, but also plays outfield. The only right-handed hitting outfielder on the 40-man roster is Brandon Barnes, whose value is increased because of his ability to play center field.

Kyle Parker was designated for assignment. Matt McBride was signed to a minor league contract by the A's. Infielder Angelys Nina, who was moved to the Topes outfield last year to increase his versatility, was signed by the Phillies. That's three fewer right-handed bats for Castellanos to compete against.

Castellanos' ability to play third base is an asset. He played a little first base last year, and a few games at second base in 2014. In my opinion, his best position is right field. His arm is well above average and he still covers a lot of ground.

Among Rockies outfield prospects, former first-round pick David Dahl and Jordan Patterson only spent a half season at double-A New Britain. Raimel Tapia was at high-A Modesto the whole season.

In summary, signing with the Rockies was a wise move for Castellanos. If one of the lefty outfielders gets traded and/or somebody gets hurt, he just might be the first in line for a callup. While he's in the minors, he gets to play in a familiar ballpark, known for being hitter friendly, in front of supportive fans ... and he knows where to go eat.

For however long Castellanos is here with the Topes, I'm excited because he's a very talented player and will definitely make the team better.
A news crew from KRQE-TV was at Isotopes Park yesterday to do a story on the expanded protective netting upcoming for the 2016 season.

Here's a link to the story: http://krqe.com/2016/01/21/isotopes-plan-to-expand-nets-for-fan-safety/

I realize that some people will be disappointed because part of the fun of coming to a baseball game is getting a foul ball. However, I'm thrilled to see this happen. Any time I see a checked swing, and the ball goes screaming into the stands, I hold my breathe that nobody gets seriously injured.

Throughout the majors and minors, it seems like we're seeing and hearing more stories about fans getting seriously injured. This is a rising concern because the trend for new ballparks throughout the last 20 years has been intimacy, and getting closer to the action. There's less time for fans to react to those foul balls and that's if you're paying attention. Between food, smart phones and many other factors, it's easy to get distracted at the ballpark.

This might be jarring to fans who are not accustomed to watching the game through netting. But I do believe this will become the new normal sooner than you think. I doubt hardly anybody who sits behind home plate is distracted by the netting. So if you're sitting above the dugout, you'll get accustomed to it quickly.

I remember going to Taiwan with the Dodgers for exhibition games in 2010. I was surprised that protective netting was not just behind home plate, but extended all the way down the foul lines. There was simply no foul ball souvenirs as a result. But that's the way it's been for a long time in Japan and Taiwan. It's their normal. I don't know if the United States will ever get that stringent with protective screens, but I fully support the new initiative.

Overwhelmingly, I can tell you that players agree. Whenever I glance at the player's passlist, it's extremely common to see them write something like "behind protective screen please" next to their family members' names. I've known players who had nightmares after hitting a foul ball into the stands that hurt somebody. For the especially gruesome injuries, I don't know if that image ever leaves their mind.

The Isotopes are following the recommendations the majors and minors have outlined. They'll work with the city of Albuquerque (the team leases the stadium) for the installation. It will take awhile to get used to seeing the expanded netting. But safety comes first, and I'm glad we're doing it.
We're less than a month from pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training, and there's still an abnormal number of free agents unsigned -- both major league and minor league free agents.

Thanks to Baseball America's handy minor league free agent tracker, it helps us keep tabs on a lot of former Albuquerque Isotopes players. We'll go into more detail about the Topes possible roster once the players all report to Arizona. But for now, let's focus on what organizations some of our old friends will be playing in 2016.

OF Mike Baxter (2014) -- Seattle Mariners
LHP Rex Brothers (2015) -- Chicago Cubs
OF Nick Buss (2013) -- LA Angels
OF/INF Alex Castellans (2012-13) -- Colorado Rockies (more on him soon)
RHP Angel Castro (2013) -- Oakland Athletics
INF Charlie Culberson (2015) -- LA Dodgers
RHP Jose Dominguez (2013-14) -- SD Padres
C Tim Federowicz (2012-14) -- Chicago Cubs
RHP Stephen Fife (2012-14) -- Chicago Cubs
OF Jeremy Hazelbaker (2014) -- St. Louis Cardinals
C Brett Hayes (2011) -- Arizona Diamondbacks
LHP Aaron Laffey (2013, 2015) -- Washington Nationals
LHP John Lannan (2015) -- KC Royals
INF Alex Liddi (2014) -- Baltimore Orioles
IB/OF Matt McBride (2015) -- Oakland Athletics
INF Angelys Nina (2015) -- Philadelphia Phillies
LHP Scott Rice (2012) -- Arizona Diamondbacks
INF Carlos Triunfel (2014) -- Cincinnati Reds
RHP Josh Wall (2012-13) -- Chicago White Sox
RHP Boone Whiting (2015) -- Washington Nationals

Also, from the 2015 roster, the following free agents have resigned with the Rockies: RHP Simon Castro, RHP Gonzalez Germen, LHP Carlos Hernandez and INF Joey Wong.

The following players from the 2015 roster are still unsigned: OF Jeremy Barfield, OF Roger Bernadina (very surprising considering the fabulous year he had), INF Brock Bond, RHP Leuris Gomez, LHP Rudy Owens, INF Jose Rivera and OF Tim Wheeler.

Update on 1-22-2016
RHP Peter Moylan (2013) has signed a minor league contract with the KC Royals.

Update on 1-26-2016
RHP Matt Magill (2013-14) has re-signed a minor league contact with Cincinnati Reds. Magill is returning from Tommy John surgery.
Over the last few days, Mother Nature has been extraordinarily spectacular from about 4:15 to 5:30 pm here at Isotopes Park. Most of the day, the sun has hidden behind clouds. The field has received relatively little sunshine at all.

In the late afternoons, however, the sun has crept out. It shines on the Sandia Mountains in the distance, illuminating them like a spotlight. And then the colors outside the ballpark have left me in awe. Here's a sample of the images I've photographed in recent days.
PLEASANTON -- Sports journalist Joshua Suchon was a 10-year-old paperboy for the Tri-Valley Herald in 1984 when he delivered the news that Tina Faelz, a 14-year-old girl from his Pleasanton neighborhood, had been brutally murdered while walking home from Foothill High School.

Suchon and other Pleasantonians who grew up in the shadow of the long unsolved murder waited 30 years before Tina's former schoolmate Steven Carlson was convicted based on DNA evidence at a trial where no motive was presented.

The convicting jury heard there had been little contact between the teens before Tina was found stabbed and slashed 44 times at the foot of a culvert near the Carlson family home.

The jury never heard what Suchon learned in his reporting for his newly released book, "Murder in Pleasanton: Tina Faelz and the Search for Justice."

"Murder in Pleasanton" reveals a shocking and little-known connection between Tina and Carlson that provides for a possible motive to the killing for which Carlson still claimed innocence when he was sentenced in January to 26 years to life in prison.

"The last remaining question for people in this case is 'why,' " Suchon said. "We'll never absolutely know why. This is the closest piece of evidence to a possible motive."

Carlson, who was 16 when Tina was killed, had long been suspected in the slaying by some peers and at least one Foothill High teacher, in large part because he would frequently say he was responsible and then claim to be joking. He lived so close to the killing scene that his was the first door that two boys came to after discovering Tina's body shortly after school on April 5, 1984. A teenage alcoholic and drug abuser, Carlson's addictions worsened after Tina's murder and he spent the next three decades in and out of jail and prison for offenses that included lewd acts on a 13-year-old girl.

But it wasn't until 2011 when an FBI lab linked Carlson's DNA to a small spot of blood on Tina's purse that he was arrested and charged with Tina's murder. The arrest inspired Suchon, a former Oakland Tribune-Alameda Newspaper Group sports reporter, to make the murder that had captivated his childhood the subject of his next book.

Suchon, 42, interviewed more than 100 people for the book during his spare time from his current job as a play-by-play radio broadcaster for Albuquerque Isotopes, the Triple-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies.

He vividly recalls talking about Tina's murder the next day at Donlon Elementary School, discussing with his friends what they heard and who might have done it. His best friend lived on Tina's street, which as a child he visited and imagined a dark cloud over Tina's house. After her murder, he didn't dare go near the creek near where Tina was found. Once he got to Foothill High School himself, he passed the memorial tree in her name daily.

"I've had a lot of former classmates tell me how terrified they were, how they slept with a knife or baseball bat near their bed, how they weren't allowed to go out at night after the murder or had an earlier curfew," Suchon said. "I'm sure there were a lot of parents who were more strict to their kids. It was definitely an uneasy feeling and there was more emphasis on being careful, traveling in groups."

At the time of Tina's murder, Pleasanton was a sleepy, 42,000-person town that had only had five murders since World War II. Compounding the tragedy, detectives had little evidence to point to a killer, frustrating Tina's family, the police department and the community at large.

Suchon has three book-signing events in the valley this week where he'll talk about the book, which gives an in-depth look at those frustrations, and shows the reader who Tina Faelz and Steven Carlson were in the minds and hearts of their friends and family. The book is available through Amazon and the publisher, The History Press, and at select valley bookstores.
